THE MEGGS BAND

Signs Of Life!

In honor of our return to Nobscot’s Cafe, Meggs & Friends recently performed Brook’s first solo album, Insecurity, in its entirety – the first complete live performance in the Northeast since the album’s official release in 2004.*

Brook was joined on stage by the core band from the original recording sessions: Karen Rusk (bass), Michael Mendelsohn (vocals, guitar, bass) and Mike Levesque (drums). The ensemble also featured new friends Kat Brooks on vocals and Jahnu on percussion.

In addition to Insecurity, the group played a 90-minute set showcasing some of Brook’s most-requested original songs from the past 20 years, and featuring surprise guest appearances by Ahren Shreeve on guitar and Dwayne Haggins on guitar and vocals.

Local acoustic heroes Rivers Between, featuring Kat Brooks (vocals) and Greg Kane (guitar, vocals), kicked off the evening with a lively set of new songs from their most recent album, Other Likely Stories.

And as soon as they let us out of here, we’ll be right back on a stage near you with a brand-new raft of original, organic, locally-sourced sounds. We’ve missed you!
=====
*If you’re not already familiar with Insecurity, you can hear it here:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsjLG3I3ekP6A0IcAe_2HEg/videos

Since March of 2020, Brook and the entire Meggs Organization & Friends, including the Meggs Band, the Jim Weeks Band, The Adventures Of, The Beagles, BrooXter, Picking Up The Pieces, Wingding Angels and the Peaceful Transfer Of Power Trio, were on surprise hiatus, along with the rest of the world.

But there just may be some glimmers of light at the end of the tunnel. (Or perhaps the headlights of an oncoming train.) World willing, we plan to re-enter earth’s atmosphere on or around July 4, 2022, and will be back on stage as soon as we adjust to local gravity. We’ve collected a startling array of shiny new sounds, sights and songs on our travels, and we’ll be bringing them along. Watch carefully – we may have some new sleeves up our sleeves…

Meanwhile, back on earth, The Meggs Band‘s new album, The First Are In February, has been waiting stoically for so sensationally long that it may actually be released at last in, well, February.

Luckily, patience has always been this band’s superpower, and the new collection will finally be utterly released in conjunction with the impending cavalcade of live events.

Stay tuned!

Meggs Band Declares Victory; Some Counties Still Not Heard From

No One Sure What To Do Next

In the absence of news to the contrary, The Meggs Band reportedly declared victory in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, January 16th, 2021.

Industry reaction was swift but unsure. Longtime observers were said to be “baffled” by the announcement, which was hand-delivered to the long-abandoned aircraft hangar that once housed the campaign headquarters of Selectman-Elect Baxter F. Hall. Mr. Hall, ensconced in his fortified winter dacha atop Mount Washington, initially disavowed any advance knowledge of the declaration and claimed to be “unclear” regarding his role in its stipulation.

But when the national media tumult showed no signs of abating by late afternoon, the enigmatic Hall strode onto the expansive deck of his palatial aerie for a “media availability,” and, despite challenging conditions, persevered in delivering a wide-ranging and seemingly-spontaneous statement without blinking for well over an hour; unfortunately, prevailing winds of 135-miles-per-hour rendered his remarks almost entirely unintelligible to the sparse array of reporters clinging grimly to the peak’s icy granite facade. Aides later admitted privately that the outdoor setting “should probably have been reconsidered.”

Hall’s hair was particularly resplendent, and he appeared relatively fit despite having spent a superfluously-long winter in forced seclusion with bandmates from his rootsy side-project Haulin’ Oats, which is said to merge two venerable American musical traditions – blues and folk – into an entirely new genre to be marketed to young fans as “blolk.”

Meanwhile, Meggs Organization Chairman Etcetera Brook Meggs appears to have transitioned from the surprise Covid-fueled success of his “Songwriting For Losers” seminars into what he describes as a “full-immersion product fabrication process” for his latest sybaritic ensemble, known regionally as the Peaceful Transfer Of Power Trio.

Meggs & Hall Ink Bilateral Accord; “BROOXTER” Ramifications Unheard

Nobscot’s to Host Uncharted Collaboration on 3/7/20

On Saturday, March 7th, 2020, guitarists Baxter Hall and Brook Meggs will unveil BROOXTER, their all-new joint adventure, amid the familiar confines of Nobscot’s Cafe in Framingham MA. The March 2020 gala is the latest installment in The Meggs Organization‘s popular “Nobscot Nights” Series, now entering its 5th year.

Meggs and Hall are well-known at the legendary venue: both regularly appear with their respective eponymous ensembles, and it’s not unusual to find one (or sometimes both) on stage adding a distinctive lead guitar counterpoint to some of the area’s premier vocal acts, including Dwayne Haggins, Jim Weeks, Bella, the BabyMakers, Roadworn Ramblers and many more.

Though perhaps best-known for challenging the limits of modern guitar theory with their diverse stylings and ground-breaking tonal gambles, Hall and Meggs continue to thrive in the pop realm as creative bandleaders, honest singers and accomplished songwriters. Each has a new collection of original material scheduled for release later this year.

Joining them in BROOXTER are Jahnu on drums and percussion and Mendelsohn on bass and vocals.

Mendelsohn, currently based in San Francisco, will be making a rare East Coast appearance to take part in this very special event. He is well-known as a featured performer with the Bay Area’s top theater and opera companies, while simultaneously maintaining an inappropriately loud rock-and-roll calendar. He and Meggs originally joined forces in Southern California, and earned early acclaim for their landmark improvisations with Venus of Willendorf.

Jahnu and Baxter also share a bit of musical history, albeit more recent: both were featured on rising star Dwayne Haggins’ much-lauded debut album “Heavenly Rose” (2018) and its follow-up “China Ruby” (2019), and they performed extensively together throughout 2017-19 as core members of Haggins’ stellar live band.

According to anonymous sources high within The Meggs Organization, the nascent BROOXTER ensemble is currently ensconced in an undisclosed offshore rehearsal facility where they remain immersed in preparations for their massively impending debut.

Officials refused, however, to offer any glimpse of insight into what songs or sounds are likely to emanate from the secretive quartet. Security personnel, speaking “way” off the record, hinted that the show will focus on new material unlike anything the band members have generated previously. “Sounds a lot like something you ain’t never heard,” is all that one nervous locksmith could offer before scurrying back to his truck.

Needless to say, it would be wise to venture out to Nobscot’s on Saturday, March 7, 2020.  Experience an unknown quantity in a well-known space. Let’s find out just where this strange excursion is headed. Wagering is encouraged with proper ID.

Meggs Band To Terminate ‘Teens With Million $ Bash On 12/27

Haggins, Weeks & Meggs Ready to Rendezvous at Nobscot’s Yet Again

This Friday, December 27, the Meggs Band will close out Twenty-Nineteen at their favorite performing space, Nobscot’s Cafe in Framingham, where they’ll be joined by local mainstays Dwayne Haggins and Jim Weeks along with members of their respective bands. Meggs, Haggins and Weeks have shared the bill on over a dozen occasions during 2019, so it’s only fitting that they finish off the year together.

This month’s edition of the Meggs Band will be powered by Karen Rusk on bass and double 2019 Boston Music Awards Nominee Chuck Ferreira on drums. Tina Marie Lionstar will be the featured vocalist, and Meggs himself is likely to sing and strum a fur bit. As ever, Will Woyda, the “Master Of Sound & Time” himself, will handle the sonic space and contribute some ace bass.

The jam-packed evening will get off to an early start at 8 p.m., as local violin legend and 2019 Boston Music Awards Nominee Marnie Hall leads her brand-new ensemble the Toasted Orange Blossoms in their world premiere performance.

The evening will also feature a highly-anticipated performance by the Young Nameless Men, the controversial but fast-rising duo based in Cold Spring, New York. In another surprising development, reliable sources insist that the long-dormant Wingding Angels will appear, in what would be their only known public performance of the year.

So please head on down to Nobscot’s on Friday 12/27 as old and new favorites collaborate to finish off the year and lean forward together into a new decade of creative exploration and joint musical adventure.

Friday, 12/27/19, 8:00 pm. Nobscot’s Cafe, 847 Edgell Road, Framingham MA.

This Friday, November 15, The Meggs Band will return to their favorite performing space, Nobscot’s Cafe in Framingham, for an evening of longtime discoveries and new favorites. This month’s edition of the band will be powered by Karen Rusk on bass and “2019 Boston Music Awards Nominee” (as usual) Mike Levesque on drums. Beverly Bond will be the featured vocalist, and Meggs himself is likely to sing and strum a fur bit.

The band will be joined at strategically meaningful moments by some of their favorite players: Doug Betschart (Back Pages) on guitar and vocals, James Burke (BabyMakers) on vocals, and Olive Freitag (vocals), who will front the band for a mini-set of her original songs.

The evening will also feature a rare and highly-anticipated performance by the Betschart & Bond Acoustic Duo, and our good friend Johnny Lee will kick things off at 9:00 pm in his Nobscot’s debut.

And as ever, Will Woyda, the “Master Of Sound & Time” himself, will handle the sonic space and play some ace bass.

Meggs, Haggins & Weeks Bands Ready For Sonic Rendezvous In Ashland

September 27th Concert Will Kick Off Fall Season Of Marconi’s Friday Music Series

This Friday, September 27, The Meggs Band will once again share the stage at Marconi’s Theatre in Ashland with The Jim Weeks Band and Dwayne Haggins. The three high-profile local ensembles have crossed paths frequently in recent months, including a memorable evening in June when they co-headlined the gala celebration in honor of Marconi’s renovation and re-opening of the venerable Ashland Music Hall. That event also launched Marconi’s highly-anticipated Friday Night Music Series.

The renovated hall is a spacious, comfortable, great-sounding room, and the Friday Night Series is intended to provide an ongoing and much-needed local platform for the homegrown music that has been thriving throughout the region in recent years. Indeed, all of Friday’s acts have deep roots in the area: Meggs in Sudbury, Weeks in Clinton, and Haggins in Framingham. Hudson’s own Gregory McConnell will open the show at 7:30 pm with a set of his unique acoustic explorations, and will also perform between bands.

The bands’ time spent sharing local stages has led to collaborations of all kinds, both onstage and off, and has given rise to a growing sense of musical community among the musicians and their fans. In the process, many audience members have become steadfast followers of all three groups. For them – and perhaps for you – Friday’s show represents the best of all musical worlds.

Friday, 9/27/19, 7:30 pm. Marconi’s Theatre, 311 Pleasant St, Ashland MA. Bring your ears!

Meggs Band Ready To Shake It Up With The Baby Makers At Nobscot’s

Midsummer Night’s Musical Mix’n’Mash: The Sound Of A Smashing Sonic Sensation

This Friday, August 23, The Meggs Band will be mixing it up with high-octane local heroes The Baby Makers at Nobscot’s Cafe. Both bands are well-known for their dedication to collaborative exploration of the musical universe. Who knows what they may discover as they join forces at Nobscot’s, long the heart of Framingham’s thriving local music scene?

The Baby Makers will kick things into gear at 9 PM, The Meggs Band at 10, and when the clock strikes 11, the bands will team up to shake, rattle, rock and roll the Nobscot faithful on into the wee hours. In every combination, the members of both bands will meld, merge and trade places as they deconstruct, reinvent, recombine and harmonically converge into a musically metaphoric human pyramid of headrocks and heartbeats. Hope you’ll join us for the Ultra Sound Test…

Meggs Band To Take Beagles For A Walk Down The Midway

Seldom-Seen Spinoff Set To Share Stage With BabyMakers, Dwayne Haggins & Baxter Hall

This Saturday, July 13, Meggs Band offshoot “The Beagles” will kick off an evening of powerhouse rock-and-real featuring four diverse bands at the mighty Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain. Their 8:30 pm performance will be followed by sets from Baxter Hall, Dwayne Haggins, and high-octane local heroes The BabyMakers.

Though rarely seen and notoriously difficult to train, The Beagles have in fact performed sporadically for more than a decade. Their perplexing jumble of quirky original songs and unlikely covers has bemused audiences at randomly-selected venues all the way from Boston to the loudly self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital Of The World” itself, Austin TX.

The Beagles feature Karen Rusk on bass, Chuck Ferreira on drums, Marnie Hall on violin, and Brook Meggs on guitars and vocals.

Scientists Announce: Spring Delayed Until April 6th This Year

“Climate Change has nothing to do with it,” says Dr. Will Woyda

According to reliable sources, a consortium of global scientists today announced at their Annual Conference that Spring 2019 will not begin until approximately 8:30 pm (EDT) on April 6. In a summary report released on the final day of the sold-out Las Vegas confab, organizers revealed that the scientific consensus is clear: the new season will not officially commence until the Meggs Band takes the stage at Nobscot’s Cafe in Framingham, Massachusetts, on Saturday evening, April 6.

Executives at The Meggs Organization, the famously secretive holding company that controls the band, confirmed the report but declined to be identified for fear of reprisals from other seasons, particularly Winter, which has been obliged to work without pay for an additional 17 days due to the schedule change.

The much-anticipated date will mark the band’s first live performance of the year. Reached at his palatial Watertown estate (which doubles as a Halloween-themed amusement park), drummer Chuck Ferreira explained the late start: “It’s winter. We’ve been hibernating. It snowed the other day, for God’s sake.”

Six of the band’s seven members will be on hand for this outing: drummer Ferreira, bassist Karen Rusk, vocalists Tina Lionstar and Beverly Bond, bass-and-sonic-space maven Will Woyda, and guitarist Brook Meggs himself. To make up for lost time, the ensemble will be joined by guitarist Jack Margolis and vocalist James Burke.

“They’ll be coming and going,” Meggs said during a terse exchange outside the band’s remote offshore rehearsal facility.

’18 + 1 = Twenty-Nineteen:   Onward & Upward

If any one place sustains the pulse of the local music community, it is Nobscot’s Cafe, where three of the area’s top bands joined together on December 28 to finish of 2018 with a collaborative celebration of musical family. Dwayne Haggins, Jim Weeks and Brook Meggs brought their bands and beats straight to the heart of the thriving musical community that has sprung to life (understatement alert) in recent years right here in Middlesex and environs.

What better way to celebrate the strange and joyous, challenging and inspiring year that was 2018? Anchored by stellar acoustic turns from Hannah Robuccio and Gregory McConnell, December’s show featured the final live sets of this busy year from Haggins, Weeks, Meggs, and company, featuring Beverly Bond, Tina Lionstar, Karen Rusk, Mike Levesque, Mike Kelly, Will Woyda and surprise guests Kat Brooks and James Burke, all of whom combined in constantly evolving configurations throughout the evening.

The “family” most certainly brought it on home to a standing-room-only crowd – a most fitting musical celebration that started early and lingered late, culminating in Jim Weeks’ hypnotic solo performance of “The End” — which it most certainly was.

We’re hibernating in the lair for a few chilly months, writing, recording and conjuring a batch of brand new sounds to suit the brand new year. Stay tuned for a full slate of impending dates for 2019, and Watch This Space: Surprises lurk just ahead!

See you there…

OCTOBER ACTION:

Busy Week, Busy Weeks

Lots of lots going on here & now, smack dab in the middle of the best season of all — fall.

I — SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 — Amazing Things

Brook is excited and honored to be part of a very special event this Sunday 10/14, the CD Release Celebration for Dwayne Haggins‘ spectacular debut album, Heavenly Rose. Brook will be playing lead guitar for local legend Jim Weeks, whose song “Burning Bridges” is the closing track on Dwayne’s record. Jim will kick off the show with a set of all-original music at 2 p.m.

AMAZING THINGS Arts Center – Framingham MA

II — WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17 — Main Streets

We’re hoppin’ happy to announce the return of the Meggs Band for a pair of shows. First off: It’s hard to believe, but the Meggs Band, as such, has never had the pleasure of performing at Concord’s premier live music venue, Main Streets Cafe. Well, Concordians, fret no more. Thanks to the good graces of the Bruce Marshall, there we shall be, on Wednesday, October 17th, at 7:30 pm.

Bruce, long a pillar (or, should I say, the pillar) of the local music scene, a marvelous singer, player, songwriter and generally tireless all-around local hero, needs no introduction. But we most certainly do. Luckily, Bruce has most graciously offered to provide just that: we’ll be his featured guests for the October edition of the monthly Bruce Marshall Sessions series.

The Meggs Band will kick things off at 7:30, after which Mister Marshall himself will take the stage with guitar in hand for a set of originals and standards, which he most reliably manages to remake as his own.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the Meggs & Marshall guitar duo will reunite to close out the evening with a long-overdue set of new and old favorites that at least one of us knows, or perhaps may have heard someone play somewhere at some point. We think.

WEDNESDAY, 10/17, 7:30 pm

MAIN STREETS CAFE – 42 Main Street,  Concord MA

III — SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 — Nobscot’s

AND . . . to finish off our busiest performing week of the year, The Meggs Organization will present the latest in its multi-themed “Nobscot Nights” Series. This time around, Meggs & Friends will be at your service, armed with plenty of new material from the overstuffed Meggs Band album, along with a batch of surprise songs suitable to the evening’s theme: All Soles’ Night.

Yes, by popular demand, it’s an entire evening of entertainment in recognition of footwear of all kinds. Come well shod! Prizes and high honors for fantastic footwear!

The night will also feature the aforementioned (and rather amazing) Jim Weeks, who will open the show with a solo set in addition to joining forces with Meggs and company later in the evening.

So don’t forget your feet, definitely don’t overlook your shoes, and please join us for a full dose of fall fun in Framingham…

FRIDAY, AUGUST 24th

The MEGGS ORGANIZATION presents an odd evening with Meggs & Friends at Nobscot’s Cafe…

Yes, we’re looking forward to celebrating the dog days of summer right back in our favorite performance space. We’ll be featuring new stuff from the massively impending new album, along with unfamiliar standards and strange favorites.

The magnificent Mike Levesque will magically reappear on drums for the first time since April, and rumor has it that a certain Lionstar will be shining brightly in the local firmament. And everything you’ve heard is true: our featured guest for the evening will be Marnie Hall, complete with violin.

SEE YOU THERE! And by “there,” I mean HERE:

Fri 8/24 — 9:00 til midnight — 847 Edgell Road – Framingham MA

==================================================

SATURDAY, JUNE 9 – 8:30 til midnight

Another fine night at Nobscot’s

It had been a while, but it sure was nice to be back at full force, with Tina Lionstar and Beverly Bond on vocals, Karen Rusk on bass and Chuck Ferreira on drums. And, yes, Meggs himself strummed some strings and sang a thing or three.

We debuted material from our increasingly inevitable new album, along with unfamiliar faves and new standards from the vault. Among other surprises, we played Set II in acoustic mode for a change of pace, without drums.

Throughout the evening, we were happy to be joined once again by our good friend and frequent collaborator David Stimson on sax — whatever the tune, David always brings something new and inspiring to the journey.

And to kick off Set III, we were excited to feature consecutive powerhouse cameos by Cameron Bond-Raia and Will Woyda on bass. Will, of course, has been our main man for a good long while now, shaping the sonic space when he’s not funking things up on bass. Meanwhile, this was Cameron’s first appearance with us (the first of many, we trust) and also his debut on the Nobscot’s venerable stage. Both thoroughly rocked the place.

Our thanks to everyone in that most excellent crowd for getting the Summer of ‘Eighteen off to such a superb start!

[Other Recent Posts]

While the Meggs Band is immersed in final recording and post-production of our upcoming barrage of releases, we’re keeping busy with a melange of pop-up gigs, spin-off shows, solo projects and whatnot. The Meggs Organization continues to present its “Nobscot Nights” Series in Framingham MA, often featuring The Noyes Band and a revolving series of unique guest artists.

The Noyes Band* is the Meggs Band’s official live spinoff ensemble, featuring Karen Rusk (bass), Chuck Ferreira (drums) and Brook Meggs (guitars, vocals). The core band usually collaborates with a featured guest musician (or three), and have even been joined by MB members Beverly Bond (vocals, bass) and Tina Lionstar (vocals, guitar) to offer up a stew of favorite covers and select originals that haven’t been heard at a Meggs Band show since who knows when, if ever.

Recent entries in the Nobscot Nights Series have featured superbly stellar stints by Gregory McConnell, Dwayne Haggins, Baxter Hall, Marnie Hall, Will Woyda, DC Callanan, David Stimson, Jon Rogers and Arte Munoz. Mysterious improv upstarts The Wingding Angels have materialized just in time to open several events, and The Meggs Organization was delighted to present the surprise world debut performance of the unlikely guitar duo brooXter.

Note: These days, MeggsOrg events are generally available via live stream, so watch this space and the Meggs Band’s Facebrook page for details, dates and times — there’s much more to come in Twenty-Eighteen…

* Why the “Noyes” band, you may ask?

1) The Sudbury Poor Farm, which now houses The Meggs Organization & Archives, sits on land that was part of the Noyes family’s original stake when the town was founded in 1639. The Town purchased the land from farmer Asa Noyes in 1833 to use as the site for the brand-new Poor Farm, which was built in 1835 and now serves as the Marlboro Road headquarters for all things Meggs.

2) “Noyes” pretty much captures our ambivalence about this topsy-turvy world these days: NO? YES? NO/YES?

3) We can get pretty darn noisy.

=====================================================

It’s Eighteen! (And we do know what we want…)

The Meggs Band finished off 2017 with a sensational seasonal shindig at Slater’s in Bolton MA. Our first time ever at this very special venue, known for its massively fine vibe and the very human beings who make the space what it is. (And OK, I suppose the superb pizza and BBQ don’t hurt…)

The room was decked, halls and all, for the holidays, and overflowed with family and friends, many of whom had never met each other (or us) until that very evening — it’s that kind of place. Slater’s is one lively listening joint, where music appreciation begets participation and standing invites become dancing delights in a blink and a wink.

We’ll be back in Bolton soon. In the meantime, we’ll keep you posted on our whereabouts, or thereabouts.

★ ★ ★

As for the rest of 2017, the band had a consistently surprising, creatively inspiring, unpredictably productive year together, sharing the yin of evolution on the fly at a series of uniquely live shows and the yang of immersion during ten days of full-concentration studio sessions at Top Hat Recording, deep in the wilds of Tennessee.

Speaking of those live surprises, you may well have noticed that no two Meggs Band shows are alike — showflakes perhaps?

Be that as it may, we sure want to thank everyone who came out to watch the circus and help us tend to the (finally) free-range elephants — your encouragement and enthusiasm, your patient ears and open minds, are the reason that whatever it is that happens happens.

You know who you are (probably), and we know who you are (definitely), but for the benefit of any not-so-innocent bystanders, here are a few without whom we could not do:

Will Woyda, Sophia Woyda, and Lana & Paul while we’re at it, Dwayne Haggins, Jim Weeks, Jon Rogers, Cori & Steve & Paul & Maureen & the Nobscot’s gang, Bruce & Dawn & Sandi & company at Slater’s, Elizabeth & the crew at Dante’s/Firefly’s, Mary Podio & John Harvey at Top Hat in Knoxville, Doug & Cam, Sylvia & Ralph, Andrea & Irwin, Cliff & Louise, DC, Cindy Lou, Mickey, Kat, Angus, Natasha, Gregory, Meg, Chris, Arte, Martin, Scott, Marguerite & Ashleigh, Justin, David, Dave, Mike, Carlton, Lee, Kristin & Dan, Suzanne, Carol & Jimmy, Pat & Budgie…I should keep going but my fingers are falling off. Like I said, you know who you are.

★ ★ ★

Now it’s back to work on our spanking new album, along with a couple of excellent surprises that will…whoops – I nearly let the cats out of the bag.

We’ll keep you posted! Keep in touch, watch this space and of course follow us on FaceBrook and all the usual spaces and places.
